Memory management using RAMPage

This page is really a successor to my article about Memory management using Rambooster, so I will not repeat here the basic hows and whys of memory management which I outlined there. For a series of in-depth articles about the limitations of memory managers and the bogus nature of some of their claims see Fred Langa's Resource Leaks, Part Two (and also parts 1, 3 and 4).

RAMPage does almost everything that other memory managers can do (including defragging memory and freeing memory unreleased by crashed or badly coded programs) but has one major advantage in that it can be run from a command-line. I normally use RAMPage by clicking a desktop shortcut with the following target:

    "C:\Program Files\RAMpage\RAMpage.exe" M=63 O

In the above line, the 'M=63' tells RAMPage to try to free up 63 Mb and the 'O' makes it run once and then close. Adding 'D=Y' would make it defrag the used memory, but in practise I have found this takes much longer for no noticeable benefit. (Fred Langa estimates the likely time-saved by defragging memory to be approximately one six millionth of a second per 100 memory-access operations.)

RAMPage can also be set-up to work like other system-tray/memory-resident utilities, and is easily configured using the following window:

The home page for RAMPage is at: http://www.jfitz.com/software/RAMpage/index.htm

When I last looked (5th july 2001) the download link points to an extensive list of mirrors for RAMPage version 1.6: http://www.simtel.net/pub/dl/38765.shtml
