Single Sessions

These workshops are typically 2½ hours but may be shorter or longer if needed.

  • BERKOFF'S METAMORPHOSIS

The objective of this workshop is to give students a real insight into both the theory and practise of Berkoff's theatre in general, with specific reference to Metamorphosis.  As well as demonstrating and explaining, George Dillon directs the students in a variety of exercises, designed to give them a practical experience of Berkoffian performance.  While the workshop is not designed to directly address exam-type questions, the students are invited to ask questions, and to influence the direction of the workshop.  Teachers are also invited to request specific aspects in advance.

  • VITAL THEATRE: WORDS, SOUNDS & POWER

This workshop focusses on the speaking of text, and explores a number of different approaches and how they can be fused.  Areas explored include sight-reading, chunking, counterpoint, pacing, rhyme & rhythm, meaning & metalanguage, subtext, motivation and memory.

  • VITAL THEATRE: WORDS & ACTION

"Suit the action to the word, the word to the action" (Hamlet)

This workshop explores how movement is created from words. Using texts from a variety of sources - poetry, prose and drama - students will overcome their unwillingness to get off their bums, and discover some simple and some very powerful techniques for transforming the page to the stage.

  • THE SECRET OF HAMLET

A practical reassessment of perhaps the most misunderstood character in English literature.  Olivier introduced his film of Hamlet with the words "This is the story of a man who couldn't make up his mind" fixing the modern interpretation of Hamlet as a tortured intellectual ditherer.  But that's not how Elizabethans saw him.

2 - 5 Day programmes

  • ACTING ALONE

Audition speeches and soliloquies present every actor with the challenge of being alone on stage.  A solo show is an increasingly popular route for actors to showcase themselves.  After giving nearly 1,000 performances in six acclaimed one man shows, George Dillon is uniquely qualified to lead a workshop exploring all aspects of solo performance.
